The following faculties and institutes accept candidature only applications.
You will need to complete an expression of interest (EOI) form prior to submitting a full application via the online Higher Degree by Research Application Form.

Candidature and scholarship application dates
There are a number of scholarships available to students studying a Higher Degree Research at Deakin. The process and application dates for candidature and scholarships are different for each faculty or institute.
Refer to the information below to determine the correct dates and application process.
Please note the dates may vary depending on whether you are applying as a domestic or international applicant.
Faculty of Arts and Education
The Faculty of Arts and Education is not accepting applications for the DUPR Scholarship Round 1, 2024.
Domestic and international applicants interested in the DUPR Scholarship Round 2, 2024 (commencement 2025) should re-visit this page in April for application dates.
EOI applications are being accepted for other scholarships and candidature only (domestic applicants only). All applicants must complete and submit an EOI form (DOCX, 70.1KB) prior to applying via the HDR application form. The faculty will then advise whether you should proceed in applying for candidature and scholarship.
Faculty of Business and Law
Business and Law PhD students can commence their program in either Trimester 1 (March) or Trimester 2 (July) each year. Faculty of Science, Engineering and Built Environment
Research with the Faculty of Science, Engineering and Built Environment by beginning your research journey by reviewing the comprehensive list of research projects with an assigned supervisory team available for prospective research candidates or contact our academics in Architecture and Built Environment, Engineering, Information Technology and Life and Environmental Sciences and develop a project of interest together.
All applicants will complete an expression of interest and we’ll assess if you’re eligible to study a research degree or PhD. Before you submit, check if you meet the entry requirements. If supervision is available, we’ll issue you a formal invitation to submit an online application.

Institute for Frontier Materials
All applicants must complete and submit an Expresion of Interest via the Expression of Interest Form prior to applying via the HDR application form. The Institute will then advise whether or not you should proceed in applying for candidature and scholarship.
Institute for Intelligent Systems Research and Innovation
The institute will accept scholarship applications between the dates below. You may apply directly via the Higher degree by Research Application Form.

Intake dates
The commencement of your course will depend upon the faculty or institute you are enrolling in and your residency status. If you have Australian or New Zealand citizenship or Australian permanent residency, you are classified as a domestic student. All other students are classified as international students. Please refer to the intake dates listed below.
