Employment-based pathway for Master of Teaching (Secondary) students

This innovative, employment-based pathway is designed for students in Deakin’s Master of Teaching (Secondary) courses. You’ll work in real classrooms while completing your studies, applying your learning, building professional skills and developing confidence and connections that will accelerate your teaching career.

Teach Today pathway benefits

Choosing the Deakin RISE pathway offers a range of unique benefits, including:

  • Hands-on classroom experience while you study: Gain practical teaching experience from early in your course (employment is subject to availability and is not guaranteed).
  • Guidance from a Deakin teaching coach: Deakin RISE students who are employed via the Teach Today employment-based pathway will receive personalised support for their professional development and workplace learning.
  • Integrated course placements: Complete all required placements within your school once employed, giving you continuity between study and work.
  • Build your career network: Develop relationships with teachers, peers and school communities that will support your future teaching career.

Receive support from Deakin teaching coaches

Every participant is paired with a Deakin teaching coach, an experienced early teaching specialist who provides ongoing guidance on professional growth. They support your academic learning alongside practical work experience and help foster a supportive peer learning community so you can thrive.

How to apply

To apply for Deakin RISE (Teach Today), follow the steps below.

  1. Apply for one of the eligible Master of Teaching (Secondary) courses.
  2. Accept your offer.
  3. Complete the online employment-based pathway application form, emailed to your Deakin account after you accept your offer.

Eligibility

Deakin RISE is open to students who are enrolled in one of these eligible courses:

The Department of Education have specified that only students with one or more of the following approved teaching methods will be eligible for 2026: Science, Mathematics, English. Approved secondary teaching methods are advised within course offer communications to students.

You must also be a domestic student residing in Victoria and be willing to work in one of the priority local government areas (LGAs).

In response to the increasing need for secondary teachers in particular areas of Victoria, you must must be willing to work in one of these Victorian Department of Education priority areas (S = Shire, C = City, RC = Rural City).
