Frequently asked questions
How do group assignments work when studying online?
Students doing group assignments collaborate with one another through our online portal, CloudDeakin.
Do I need to attend face-to-face exams if studying online?
Depending on the type of final assessment in your unit, you may be required to attend an exam in person. These may be either paper based or a supervised online exam. Students can choose from locations in all Australian states and in more than 45 countries worldwide.
Are there any on-campus requirements for online students?
Some online course may have short intensive units on campus for a period of up to one week. End-of-unit practical assessments and exams may also, on occasion, require you to be on campus. The dates for these are announced on the unit page to allow you to make plans to be here.
What supports are available for online learning?
Deakin is the #1 university in Victoria for student support and that support extends to our online students. Academic support programs, such as maths and writing mentoring and subject-specific peer study groups are all available online.
All students, regardless of study mode, get a lifetime of career support through our career service, DeakinTALENT. From anywhere in the world you can access career advice, a resume review service and exclusive job listings.
Will I be watching live lectures and seminars or will they be recorded?
Online learning at Deakin uses both recorded and live lectures and seminars. It varies by the unit you are enrolled in and may include a combination of recorded and livestreamed sessions. Livestreamed lectures are recorded for your convenience.
Seminars and group discussions may also be recorded; however, we recommend you attend them live as often as possible so you can fully interact with your lecturer and classmates.
Are there attendance requirements for online courses?
Online study is designed for maximum flexibility to fit your busy lifestyle. Livestreamed lectures and seminars are recorded so you can view them on your schedule. And you won’t be penalised for not being there in person.
There are obvious situations where you can’t be as flexible though. There are still deadlines for assessments that you have to meet. And group work will require you to be available online with your team.
