Content
This unit provides a critical and advanced examination of evidence-based research in literacy, numeracy, and learning development, with a particular emphasis on diverse learners. Students will engage with research on the importance of explicit instruction for literacy, and early-reading development, and research on the importance of explicit instruction for numeracy. Through this unit students will engage with explicit literacy and numeracy instruction across disciplines and investigate and apply strategies for incorporating this explicit instruction into their planning across the curriculum.
Students will engage with contemporary research to evaluate and apply effective methodologies for enhancing literacy and numeracy engagement. The unit examines approaches to data collection and analysis, considering how empirical evidence informs policy development and the creation of evidence-based teaching strategies. A key aspect of this unit is the integration of Multi-Tiered Systems of Supports (MTSS), which provides a structured framework for delivering differentiated instruction and intervention at increasing levels of intensity based on student need.
A particular focus is placed on applying research-driven strategies within specialist subject areas, particularly in the middle and later years of education. Students will conduct a comprehensive audit of teaching methodologies designed to support literacy and numeracy development, critically assessing their efficacy in diverse educational settings. The implementation of MTSS within this context ensures that students can effectively identify, support, and monitor learners across various tiers of intervention, from universal instruction to targeted and intensive support.
Through rigorous analysis and practical application, this unit ensures that students acquire the expertise required to make informed, data-driven decisions that enhance literacy and numeracy outcomes. Graduates of this unit will be equipped with the competencies necessary to contribute to the ongoing improvement of educational practices and policies, fostering inclusive and effective learning environments that respond to the diverse needs of all learners.
