Content

This unit provides a comprehensive introduction to contemporary theory and pedagogy of language teaching and learning. It supports teacher education candidates to develop foundational knowledge and skills related to national and state- and territory-based curricula and frameworks, and best practice pedagogy and assessment in the discipline, enabling them to effectively engage diverse students in language learning across primary and secondary contexts.

In this unit, students explore the context of Languages education in Australian schooling with a view to critically evaluating and reflecting on the history of the discipline, language acquisition theories and their implications for language education, and a range of language teaching approaches, along with skills development for planning, sequencing, and delivering Languages programs.

The assessment tasks in this unit will support pre-service teachers of Languages to adapt and apply their developing pedagogical content knowledge in lesson planning, the selection and integration of different resources and strategies for teaching, including the use of digital technologies, and assessment of student learning.
