Study commitment:

Students will on average spend 150 hours over the teaching period undertaking the teaching, learning and assessment activities for this unit.

This will include educator guided online learning activities within the unit site.

Scheduled learning activities - campus:

4 x 2 hour on-campus seminars (Professional Practice)

Online independent learning activities and collaborative learning activities, including 6 x 1.5 hour online team-based simulation practice education experiences

1 x 10 day practice education clinical placement. (Dates and format to be advised at start of trimester; could be 2 days per week for 5 weeks or a 2 week block).

Inherent requirements
Applications are accepted from students who possess the skills and prerequisites required to complete the occupational therapy course, gain professional certification and practise safely. The inherent requirements of the course are listed here.

Working with Children Check
In accordance with the Worker Screening Act 2020, all students are required to undertake a Working with Children Check at the commencement of the course. Students who fail to obtain a Working with Children Check prior to the commencement of practice education will not be able to undertake practice education impeding their progression in the course. Police record check
In accordance with the Department of Health policy, all students are required to undertake a Police Record Check prior to practice education in each calendar year of the course. Students who fail to obtain a Police Record Check prior to the commencement of practice education will not be able to undertake practice education, impeding their progression in the course. Immunisation Status
Students are required to declare their immunisation status to satisfy the requirements of health and community organisations where they will be undertaking their practice education. An organisation may refuse to accept a student for practice education if the student’s immunisation status does not align with their requirements, impeding the student’s progression in the course.

NDIS Worker Screening Check
All students are required to undertake a NDIS Worker Screening Check at the commencement of the course. This is an assessment of whether a person poses risk to NDIS participants. Students who fail to obtain a NDIS Worker Screening Check may not be able to undertake practice education, impeding their progression in the course.

Content

This unit aims to equip third-year occupational therapy students with the knowledge and skills necessary to engage in professional practice and effective team-based collaborative healthcare. Students will engage in various practice education-related learning experiences, including both simulated scenarios and clinical placement. Students will participate in facilitated simulated interprofessional teams to learn with, from and about each other, while working on the assessment and management of health problems experienced by simulated patients.  Using online team meetings, student teams will develop relevant team documents for complex scenarios.  In addition, students will prepare for, participate in and be assessed during a professional practice education experience with a clinical occupational therapy focus.
