Deakin University has consolidated its recent climb up the world university rankings, edging one place higher to 213th position in this year’s Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU).

Released today by the Shanghai Ranking Consultancy, the ARWU data shows Deakin ranked 11th in Australia, 3rd in Victoria, and firmly embedded in the top two per cent of the world’s universities.

The ARWU ranks the world’s Top 500 universities and has tracked Deakin’s rapid rise to 214th last year, from 398th in 2015 and 412th three years ago.

Deakin Vice-Chancellor Professor Jane den Hollander AO said the rise in the rankings reflected the University’s commitment to creating an environment that encourages and enables cutting-edge research and academic excellence.

“This outcome – which includes our School of Exercise and Nutrition Sciences being named the world’s best by the ARWU last December – means we have consolidated our position in the 201-300 band. We are humbled to once again be in such eminent company,” Professor den Hollander said.

“Deakin moved into the top 500 in the ARWU rankings only three years ago – reflecting our continued commitment to success in teaching and research. The fact we are now 213th in the world proves that if you value staff and build a coherent and comprehensive strategy, the results follow.

“To continue to move up the world rankings and consolidate 11th spot in Australia is something that Deakin and the communities we serve can be very proud of.”

The ARWU data also recognised improvements for Deakin and its researchers as leaders and innovators in their area of expertise.

“This is welcome and promising news for a young university like Deakin, which has researches across a full range of disciplines and has a strong focus on teaching excellence,” Professor den Hollander said.

The ARWU, formerly known as the Shanghai Jiao Tong University Ranking, is based on independently sourced data and focuses on significant indicators of research excellence.
