Deakin climbs ranks of world's top 50 young universities

Deakin has improved to 43 in the world, which is its highest placing since these rankings began in 2012.

The THE list of the top 200 universities under 50 years old has placed Deakin as number one in Victoria for the past three years, with the University now sitting at number eight of 23 Australian universities included.

Deakin University Vice-Chancellor Professor Jane den Hollander AO said at just 43 years, Deakin owed its continuing success to a strong vision for the future and its passionate and energetic academic and professional staff, students, communities and partners.

“Since these rankings began in 2012, Deakin has leapt 35 places from 78 to 43 in the list of the top 200 universities under 50 years old," Professor den Hollander said.

“Deakin has proved we are ready to drive the innovation that will create the jobs of the future.

“Deakin has grown from Victoria's first regional university in 1974 to a thriving institution with more than 55,000 students from around the world, studying across campuses in Melbourne, Geelong, Warrnambool and online in the cloud.

“I expect Deakin to keep growing its reputation and as it does we will keep working to address skills gaps, to create new industries from new ideas, and above all, to educate graduates for the jobs of the future.”

The THE Young University Rankings list the world’s best 200 universities that are aged 50 years or under based on their impact across a number of measures including teaching, international outlook, industry income, research and citations. Since the rankings started in 2012, Deakin has continued to improve its score in each of these major scoring categories.

This year THE produced three subset rankings: Millennials (universities established between 2000 and the present day), Generation Y (established between 1986 and 1999) and Generation X (established between 1967 and 1985).  Deakin was ranked 23 within the Generation X ranking.
