Deakin congratulates recipients of 2017 Australia Day honours

Deakin recognises and congratulates its staff, alumni and friends awarded Australia Day honours in 2017.

The Deakin community sends a special congratulations to Vice-Chancellor Professor Jane den Hollander AO, who received the Officer of the Order of Australia medal.

The Vice-Chancellor’s award is for distinguished service to tertiary education through a range of executive administration and advisory roles, as a supporter of professional educational organisations, and to the community.

In accepting the honour, Professor den Hollander said it belonged to the entire Deakin University community. “It’s a great honour. We’re being acknowledged for contribution to community."

Companion in the General Division of the Order of Australia (AC)

  • The Honourable Julia Gillard AC: For eminent service to the Parliament of Australia, particularly as Prime Minister, through seminal contributions to economic and social development, particularly policy reform in the areas of education, disability care, workplace relations, health, foreign affairs and the environment, and as a role model to women.
  • Her Excellency The Honourable Linda Dessau AC: For eminent service to the people of Victoria through leadership roles in the judiciary, to the advancement of economic ties and business relationships, and as a supporter of charitable, sporting and arts organisations.

  • Mr William (Bill) Bowness AO: For distinguished service to the visual and performing arts through philanthropic contributions, fundraising and advisory roles, and to the building and construction industry.
  • The Honourable John Brumby AO: For distinguished service to the Parliament of Victoria, to economic management and medical biotechnology innovation, to improved rural and regional infrastructure, and to the community.
  • Professor Jane den Hollander AO: For distinguished service to tertiary education through a range of executive administration and advisory roles, as a supporter of professional educational organisations, and to the community.
  • Rear Admiral Stuart Mayer AO: For distinguished service to the Royal Australian Navy principally in key command roles.

  • The Honourable Justice Mark Samuel Weinberg AO: For distinguished service to the judiciary and to the law, particularly through reforms to criminal law and procedure, to legal education in Victoria, and to the administration of justice in Fiji and Norfolk Island.

  • Professor Jon Altman AM: For significant service to tertiary education as a researcher and administrator, and to the social sciences and Indigenous economic policy.
  • Brigadier Stephen Beaumont AM:For exceptional service in the advancement of Defence international relations and the continued development of Defence intelligence capabilities.
  • Ms Margaret Birtley AM: For significant service to cultural heritage, particularly to the museums sector, to education, and to historical preservation.
  • Professor Jillian Blackmore AM: For significant service to education as an academic and administrator, to social justice and equity, and to policy reform.
  • Brigadier Mark Holmes AM:For exceptional service in implementing approaches to modernisation in Army and the management of Defence contributions to institutional reform.

Military – Gallantry, Distinguished & Conspicuous

  • Brigadier Justin Ellwood: Commendation for Distinguished Service For distinguished performance of duties in warlike operations as the Chief Joint Operations in Headquarters Resolute Support Kabul Afghanistan from September 2014 to September 2015.
  • Lieutenant Colonel Graham Goodwin: For outstanding achievement as the Commanding Officer of the 10th/27th Battalion, the Royal South Australia Regiment.
  • Commodore Stephen Hughes: For outstanding devotion to duty in the field of major warship introduction into service with the Royal Australian Navy.

Meritorious

  • Professor Michael Ackland (Public Service Medal): For outstanding public service through contributions to the health and wellbeing of people in Victoria.
