From the Vice Chancellor:

Welcome to this February edition of the dKin Times.

The festive season is over and the working year has started in earnest. At Deakin we’re looking forward to welcoming our new students and to welcoming back others after the summer break.

It’s also the perfect time of the year for making the most of the sunshine and the longer days – a good time to connect with friends and with our community. This year, Deakin sponsored the Elite Women’s Road race as part of the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race. The race was televised for the first time, and attracted top riders from across the globe to beautiful Geelong. It was a fabulous day, and an important reminder of the power of sport to engage people and bring them together.

I was also delighted to have the opportunity to join the almost 100 Deakin staff, students and alumni at this year’s Midsumma Pride march. It was the first time I’ve marched – it was a lot of fun and an important act of solidarity in a world where many go without rights, dignity and visibility.

This February edition of dKin Times is also an opportunity for us to congratulate the Deakin Alumni honoured in the recent Australia Day Honours – Brigadier Stephen Beaumont AM, Margaret Birtley AM, Rosemary Brown OAM, Brigadier Justin Ellwood CDS, Darryl Gauld OAM, Lieutenant Colonel Goodwin CSC, Brigadier Holmes AM, Commodore Hughes CSC, Allan Marsland OAM, Rear Admiral Mayer AO, Stuart McLeod OAM, Philip Roberts OAM, David Thodey AO, and Professor Wallace AO. You can read more of their achievements in dKin Times.

Congratulations also to the Deakin staff community honoured in this year’s Honours: Alfred Deakin Professor Jill Blackmore AM, Professor Jon Altman AM, Ms Padmini Sebastian OAM, Mark Weinber AO, Mr William (Bill) Bowness AO, Mr Roland Elias Jabbour OAM and Mr Leigh Andrew Johns OAM.

My personal congratulations to you all, Deakin is very proud of you. The success of our alumni and our staff is the truest measure of what makes Deakin a great university, you are our best ambassadors and the most important evidence of Deakin’s success.

Enjoy this month’s newsletter – it’s an excellent read and a great way to keep in touch with your university.

President and Vice-Chancellor
