First series of seminars and workshops
This first series of seminars and workshops provides information, skills and
strategies to help progress your research journey. If you are a new candidate
or wish to refresh your skills in these areas, I would strongly advise you
to attend. There will also be an international focus in these seminars and
workshops.

The Research Journey

This discusses the program of research study; what is involved in being
a Higher Degree Research student; what is supervision; facilities and
services that are available for students. The seminar will be followed
by some perceptions from second and third year students.

Student-Supervisor Interaction

This discusses reasons as to why research students need a supervisor
and the way supervisors work. It also provides strategies for establishing
an effective interaction with your supervisor so you get the most benefit.
Issues that are looked at are: arranging meetings with your supervisor;
having a meeting agenda; the duties of a supervisor and the duties of
a student.

Negotiating educational shifts

This seminar discusses the various types of education systems and their
benefits. It also foregrounds critical analysis, what can be called plagiarism,
shifts in education for you, and effective learning styles.

Negotiating cross-cultural issues

This introduces you to the Division of Student Life and the services
we offer. It also discusses the general transition issues students have
to make in coming to a new country; cultural shifts and communicating
effectively. Second year students will also be coming in to give strategies
on how they managed.
