Dr Benjamin Isakhan wins funding to document heritage destruction in Iraq and Syria

Dr Benjamin Isakhan has been awarded the first instalment of a major three-year project working with the Australian Department of Defence to document heritage destruction in Iraq and Syria. The first instalment of $110,000 forms the first of three phases that includes a total funding of $513,944 (subject to annual approval) and will include the appointment of 2 part-time Post-Doctoral Research Associates.

The project is called 'Measuring Cultural Property Destruction in Iraq and Syria' and involves the creation of sophisticated databases cataloguing the destruction of heritage across Iraq and Syria. In recent years, both Iraq and Syria have seen unprecedented degrees of heritage destruction, especially with the expansion of various forms of sectarianism and militant Islamist jihadi groups, including the 'Islamic State' (among others).
