Our founding health institutes
Deakin’s four renowned health institutes each bring deep disciplinary strength to address critical health challenges across life stages, communities and care systems.
Deakin Institute for Mental and Physical Health and Clinical Translation
The Deakin Institute for Mental and Physical Health and Clinical Translation drives innovation in the prevention and treatment of mental, physical and chronic health conditions, at both individual and population levels. Our expertise across biomedical science, clinical trials and epidemiology enables discoveries to move from the lab bench to the bedside. Informed by lived experience, our research is translated into real-world solutions that improve health outcomes for local and global communities.
Deakin Institute for Health Transformation
The Deakin Institute for Health Transformation addresses today’s most complex and compelling health challenges through collaborative research that transforms how we design and deliver prevention and care. Our work is underpinned by expertise in prevention, health systems and services, health economics and digital health. Our research and partnerships actively transform the systems that shape health policies to improve health, equity and wellbeing for everyone.
Deakin Institute for Physical Activity and Nutrition
The Deakin Institute for Physical Activity and Nutrition is a world-renowned research institute focused on the role of active living, exercise, sport, food and nutrition to improve health, wellbeing, performance and society. Our multidisciplinary research addresses all ages and life stages and covers movement and nutrition sciences, from metabolism, physiology and biological mechanisms, using exercise and diet to manage and prevent chronic health conditions and enhance human performance, sport management, through to population-based approaches.
Deakin Lifespan Institute
The Deakin Lifespan Institute conducts internationally-recognised research focused on how health, wellbeing and development are shaped across the lifespan, recognising that every age and stage matters. Research spans key areas such as mental health and wellbeing, family relationships, trauma, neurodiversity, brain development, traumatic brain injury, reproductive health and chronic physical health conditions. Working in deep partnership with communities, organisations and decision makers, we translate research directly into policy and practice solutions, delivering lasting benefits for current and future generations.

Key research and innovation fields
Our institutes deliver tangible health impacts across the following priority fields of expertise, turning research into practical solutions that improve everyday lives.
Mentally healthy lives and communities
Driving down the burden of mental illness by translating prevention and early intervention into practical, scalable supports, designed with and for the communities they serve.
Prevention, lifelong health and chronic disease intervention
Reducing chronic disease by embedding health-promoting behaviours across key life stages, through real-world interventions backed by behavioural science.
Equitable and healthy systems and communities
Advancing health systems that are efficient, equitable and adaptable, designed to deliver high-quality and integrated care, optimise resources and support long-term health outcomes for all communities through innovation, collaboration and continuous improvement.
Climate resilient and sustainable health systems
Shaping healthier environments by aligning research, policy and community action in the spaces where people live, learn, work and play, while addressing the impacts of climate change to build resilience, promote sustainability and protect health across generations.
Together, we can do much more than we could ever do alone by connecting prevention, lifestyle research, clinical translation, and systems reform.

How we create healthier communities
We drive better health outcomes by promoting healthy lifestyles, advancing breakthrough therapies, and supporting people to thrive with chronic and mental health conditions. Our work strengthens wellbeing in every workplace, reduces health inequities in disadvantaged communities and empowers local leaders to shape climate resilient health solutions. Through evidence based research and strong industry and community partnerships, we help build sustainable, future ready health systems.
