Trauma-informed practice
Deakin is the only university in Australia to embed the Berry Street Education Model into all our initial teaching degrees. This means you’ll graduate with practical, trauma-informed strategies and skills to develop safe, healthy and engaging learning environments that build positive relationships and promote academic success.
Professional experience
Our Professional Experience Program gives you real-life teaching experience and study credit for your degree. You'll undertake at least 80 days in undergraduate study of guaranteed placements with some of our 1400 participating schools and build sought-after skills.

World-class teaching experiences
Grants ($140–$420 per day) are available to support you while completing a teaching placement in an eligible regional or remote Victorian government school.
Teaching specialisations
You’ll graduate ready to teach in diverse and dynamic classrooms with 30+ specialist methods across secondary and VET disciplines — including Biology, English, Physical Education, Religious Studies, and Visual Arts.
Scholarships and grants
Deakin offers scholarships at all levels of study, supporting students from all walks of life. The Victorian Government also offers teaching scholarships up to $18,000. Placement grants are available to support pre-service teachers completing a teaching placement.

You’ll have access to specialised teaching spaces like the immersive Nyaal learning precinct in Geelong, a 360-degree theatre. We also have arts spaces and science teaching labs at our Melbourne Burwood Campus.

Do you need to take the Casper test?
If you're enrolling in an initial teacher education course starting in 2026 and the Casper test is a requirement, Deakin will cover your test fee with a $55 payment to you. To be considered for an offer, you must complete the Casper test on time. This online assessment helps us understand who you are beyond your grades, highlighting qualities like empathy and communication – key traits for future teachers.
