Deakin academics lead King's Birthday Honours List

Deakin University congratulates all who have received an award for the inaugural King's Birthday Honours list since the passing of the late Queen Elizabeth II.

Leading the awardees from Deakin is Professor Julie Considine who was appointed Officer (AO) in the General Division of the Order of Australia for distinguished service to medicine in the field of emergency nursing, to tertiary education, and to professional associations.

An internationally respected clinician, educator, and researcher whose expertise spans both industry and academic sectors, Professor Considine is a foundation member of the Centre for Quality and Patient Safety Research (QPS) within Deakin's Institute of Health Transformation.

Three distinguished current Deakin Professors were each appointed as a Member (AM) in the General Division of the Order of Australia.

Alfred Deakin Professor Maria Forsyth was appointed the AM for significant service to chemistry education, research, and scholarship.

As the Deputy Director of the Institute for Frontier Materials (IFM) at Deakin University, Professor Forsyth leads the research effort in energy storage and corrosion science.

Professor Michele Grossman, who leads research which informs both domestic and international policy-setting on countering terrorism, was awarded an AM for significant service to tertiary education, particularly to research, and to welfare initiatives.

Professor Grossman is Research Chair in Diversity and Community Resilience within Deakin's Alfred Deakin Institute (ADI), where she also leads the Centre for Resilient and Inclusive Societies and co-leads the AVERT (Addressing Violent Extremism and Radicalisation to Terrorism) Research Network.

Alfred Deakin Professor Anna Peeters was honoured with the AM for significant service to community health, particularly obesity research.

Professor Peeters is a public health researcher, particularly interested in the provision of information to facilitate objective and equitable choices in public health and health policy by policymakers, practitioners, and the public. She is also the Director of Deakin’s Institute for Health Transformation.

The King's Birthday Honours list recognises those in the Australian community who have demonstrated their commitment to service, excellency, and selflessness.

For the first time since the Order of Australia was established in 1975, a majority of the people who have been appointed are women.

Air Vice-Marshal Stephen Leslie MEREDITH – For distinguished service in responsible positions as Commander Aerospace Operational Support Group; Head Joint Capability Management and Integration; and Deputy Chief of the Air Force.

Ms Cheryl Anne VARDON – For distinguished service to public administration, particularly education and health, and for the protection of children and young people.

Mr Alan James WHALLEY – For distinguished service to business, particularly the defence capability industry, to the public sector, to aviation history, and to the community.

Ms Robyn Ann BATTEN – For significant service to the not-for-profit, health and aged care sectors.

Ms Antoinette BRAYBROOK – For significant service to the law, and to family violence prevention.

Brigadier Ashley Raymond COLLINGBURN – exceptional performance of duty as Director Sensitive and Strategic Issues Management - Army, Commander 1st Brigade, and as Global Interest Branch Head, Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet.

Professor Mark CONSIDINE – For significant service to education, and to the political and social sciences.

Mrs Patricia CROSSIN – For significant service to business, to the finance industry, and to corporate governance.

Professor Maria FORSYTH – For significant service to chemistry education, research, and scholarship.

Brigadier Warren Mark GOULD – For exceptional service to the Australian Defence Force's command and control framework as Director General Joint Command and Control Director General Systems and Integration - Army.

Ms Beth Evelyn GRAHAM – For significant service to the bilingual education of Indigenous language speaking students.
