Deakin Downtown gallery presents Gosia Wlodarczak

Gosia Wlodarczak: ARTIST NOT @(at) WORK, 31 DOMESTIC JOBS FOR DECEMBER charts Wlodarczak's performance of domestic chores around her home while clad in designer garments selected from her extensive collection, as documented by photographer Longin Sarnecki.

The high-resolution archival prints, which were also uploaded to social media for interaction, establish a dialogue and disrupt expectations between the phrases "the artist is always working" and "a woman's work is never done".

Wlodarczak said the innocuous phrases were made relevant through her work, as she performed mundane tasks in designer garb to satirise and emphasise the everyday jobs that go unrecognised and undervalued in our society.

"I am a mature woman and have been a professional artist for more than 30 years – I have experienced throughout my human and artist existence how both of those sayings overlap and how they become more and more true to me," she said.

The exhibition is showing from now until 25 May 2018, and will be formally launched by Arts Project Australia Curator and Gallery Manager Sim Luttin this Wednesday 18 April, with speeches at 6.20pm.

Wlodarczak herself is presenting a free artist talk at the exhibition on Tuesday 1 May from 3.30pm to 4.30pm. Audience numbers for the talk are strictly limited, RSVP to artgallery@deakin.edu.au
