Deakin seminar shines spotlight on integrity in sport

Managing integrity in sport will be put under the microscope at a Deakin University public seminar this month.

Event moderator Dr Jonathan Robertson, a member of the Institute for Physical Activity and Nutrition's Centre for Sport Research, will lead a panel of expert guests at the upcoming public seminar Olympism at a Crossroads, to be held in Melbourne on April 22.

The panel will discuss match fixing, doping and integrity issues within the context of the controversial Enhanced Games.

'Professional sport finds itself at a critical juncture where the principles and tenets of fair competition are suddenly being questioned,' Dr Roberson said.

'The proposed Enhanced Games loom as one of the strongest challenges to traditional positions on anti-doping and athlete wellbeing.

'We have also seen match-fixing scandals erode the trust of fans and stakeholders and shake the foundations of long-held beliefs around good sportsmanship and honest competition.'

Panellists and presenters will include Lydia Dowse, National Integrity Manager at Swimming Australia, and Iain Roy, Chief Executive of Sports Integrity and Governance Partners and founding Head of Integrity at Cricket Australia.

Associate Professor Severine Lamon of Deakin's Institute for Physical Activity and Nutrition, who completed her PhD at the Swiss anti-doping laboratory in Lausanne, Switzerland, will round out the panel.

The panel will be moderated by Dr Robertson, a specialist in sport ethics, integrity and social change and co-director of Deakin's Master of Business (Sport Management).

The event is hosted by Deakin's Centre for Sport Research within the Institute for Physical Activity and Nutrition and the Deakin Sport Network. See below for event details and to RSVP.
