The work of Deakin University art and performance research students will feature in the Deakin University Art Gallery's latest exhibition.

Co-curated by Professor David Cross and Dr Patrick Pound (Deakin School of Communication and Creative Arts) and Deakin Curator James Lynch, this large scale exhibition spans across four locations at the University’s campuses in Burwood, Melbourne City and Geelong.

Art and Performance by Researchincludes artists Anindita Banerjee, Jane Bartier, Bindi Cole Chocka, Sandy Gibbs, Shelley Jardine, Shane McGrath, Merinda Kelly, Jem Noble, Monique Redmond, Raffaele Rufo, Amber Smith, Dario Vacirca and Sorcha Wilcox.

“This exhibition reflects the strong research culture at Deakin University in the fields of the visual arts and performance,” Mr Lynch said.

“It features the interdisciplinary practices of our leading artists and thinkers who are expanding knowledge in new ways and conflating the traditional boundaries between art and science, improvisation and planning, museum practices and personal remembering, performance, public interventions and installation.”

Highlights of the exhibition include: a series of recurring gifts to the gallery by Auckland based artist Monique Redmond; a recreation of lighting the 1968 Olympic flame by Sandy Gibbs; ceremonial works and performances by Anindita Banerjee; participatory works by Merinda Kelly and a major new work by Vancouver-based artist Jem Noble at the newly opened Deakin Downtown.

The exhibition will be opened by Professor Matthew Allen, Head of Deakin’s School of Communication and Creative Arts, on Wednesday 26 July and will run throughout August to coincide with the University’s Open Days.
