Congratulations to Deakin University Middle East expert Dr Andrew Thomas, who is the co-author of an article that has been nominated for a Melbourne Press Club Quill Award.

The article was co-written by journalist and web developer at The Conversation Matt Garrow and explains the history of the Israeli-Palestine conflict. It is nominated in the category Innovation in Journalism.

A link to the full article published by The Conversation in October, Understanding the history of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in 5 charts, is here.

Dr Thomas said he hoped the article provided greater context to those seeking a better understanding of recent events in the Middle East.

'It is always difficult to fully communicate the history and complexity of the conflict in a few hundred words. Matt's idea to create animated maps and charts displaying OCHA boundary and settlement data shows how effective visual aids can be in learning about the conflict,' Dr Thomas said.

Dr Thomas is an Associate Lecturer of Middle East Politics within Deakin's School of Humanities and Social Sciences and chairs the Middle East studies course at the University. His expertise spans ancient Middle Eastern history to the contemporary Arab-Israeli conflict.

The Quills are the premier media awards in Victoria and include finalists in more than 30 categories.

The award was established in 1995 and the best category winner is selected to receive the Gold Quill and a $7500 prize.

Winners of the 29th Quill Awards will be announced at a ceremony in Melbourne on March 15.

Good luck to Dr Thomas, Matt Garrow and the other Quill nominees.
