Statement from Vice-Chancellor Jane den Hollander:

The Deakin University community is saddened to learn of the passing of Australia's 22nd Prime Minister, Malcolm Fraser.

Mr Fraser served the federal electorate of Wannon in Western Victorian for 28 years, from 1955 until his retirement in 1983. He served as Prime Minister from November 1975 until March 1983.

As a cabinet minister in 1970, Mr Fraser was instrumental in setting up the Warrnambool Institute of Advanced Education (WIAE), now a campus of Deakin University.

Mr Fraser was a proud and passionate advocate for tertiary education in the region, and our Warrnambool community was particularly saddened to hear of his passing.

In 1989, Mr Fraser was awarded an honorary Doctor of Letters from Deakin in recognition of his outstanding services to Western Victoria and the Commonwealth of Nations.

On behalf of Deakin University we offer our deepest condolences to Mr Fraser's family and friends.
