Biography summary
Dr Giovanni M. Turchini (PhD) is Professor of Nutrition and Food Science and is based at the Faculty of Science, Engineering and Built Environment, Deakin University, Melbourne (Australia), where he also holds the position of Associate Dean Research.
From 2014 to 2017, Giovanni led the Marine, Freshwater and Aquaculture Sciences research group and has being coordinating the undergraduate and post-graduate teaching programmes of Deakin University in the area of Marine Biology, Fisheries and Aquaculture. Then, from 2015 to 2018, Giovanni was the Associate Head of School (Research) for School of Life and Environmental Sciences and his leadership focused on the coordination, support and facilitation of the various research activities of the entire School, spanning from chemistry to ecology, with particular focus on industry engagement, initiation of innovative projects, high quality publications and HDR (PhD students supervision and administration). Currently, since January 2019, Giovanni is Associate Dean Research for the Faculty of Science, Engineering and Built Environment, extending his leadership in research management across the entire Faculty, indulging the School of Life and Environmental Sciences, the School of Architecture and Built Environment, the School of Engineering and the School of Information Technology.
As a biochemist nutritionist, with key interest on food quality and sustainability, Giovanni’s research interests span from fish to human nutrition, aquaculture, fatty acid metabolism, fishmeal and fish oil replacement, and ethical issues encountered in the fisheries and aquaculture sectors. Throughout his career, Giovanni has been awarded two ARC Discovery fellowships, developed a series of significant industry collaborations, published extensively, including an authored book and several book chapters, and his work is highly cited and influential.
