What is the pledge?

The Deakin University Environmental Sustainability Pledge is an initiative to encourage staff and students to consider sustainability at University and at home. In doing so, staff and students can reduce their own ecological footprint and foster a greater awareness of sustainability at Deakin.

Deakin has developed an Environmental Sustainability Strategy as part of its commitment to reducing its impact on the environment. Encouraging staff and students to reduce their own environmental footprint is one of the key objectives in the Strategy. By taking the Environmental Sustainability Pledge, you will be supporting the University’s vision and goal for a sustainable future…

‘a community working in harmony with minimal footprint, and fostering innovation, learning and accountability for a sustainable future’.

Why take the pledge?

The average Victorian needs 6.8 hectares of land to sustain their lifestyle. If everyone on the planet lived like a Victorian, it would take more than four Earths to support us! (EPA 2011). The challenges of climate change and over consumption of resources creates the need for new and creative ideas to protect our environment and our future. Play your part by committing to environmental sustainability at Deakin.

Remember: with over 40,000 staff and students across all of the campuses, your actions do count.

Take the pledge

Over the next 12 months we aim to receive 2000 pledges from staff and students. What are you waiting for? Take the pledge today!

Find out how many staff and students have taken the pledge.

An official launch will be held in 2012.
