Deakin Policy Forum
Australia faces the most unusual political, economic, and international setting for many decades and the Deakin Policy Forum (DPF) aims to help others make sense of our policy predicaments - economic, social and political.
Deakin Policy Forum will be a new bridge between the 'ideas communities', interested observers and those who make or administer policy. We seek to invite and broker debate; draw on the best available expertise and offer critique or alternative views to those that may have political traction at the time.
The Forum, aimed to be framed in sound economics, will traverse key policy sectors. In areas such as water, broadband, education, health, population and taxation; getting the economics wrong can be lethal. But, of course there is always far more than just an economic perspective, and in line with the Alfred Deakin Research Institute mission the forums will offer multi-disciplinary perspectives.
Where is the Deakin Policy Forum?
The Forum is hosted by the Alfred Deakin Research Institute with events often taking place at the Deakin University Melbourne City Centre.
Governance
An Advisory Council has been formed with a strong base of economic; health, energy, labour market, state enterprise and water sector expertise.
The Council through its meetings, often electronic, and as an adjunct to policy forums, will also seek and generate topics and contributors.
Regular membership in the DPF will be sought from individuals, corporate, and institutions including NGOs and government agencies. DPF events will be designed for follow-on workshops, as suits the situation, often after the breakfast meetings and with electronic or web-based access.

Forum update
The inaugural Deakin Policy Forum (DPF) 'The State of the Economic Debate' was held at the Deakin University Melbourne City Centre in the form of a breakfast in early December 2011. The speakers, Professor Judith Sloan and Professor Henry Ergas covered the key underlying issues with great insight.

The second Deakin Policy Forum Changing Fashions in Public Sector Governance including Experiences Under the Rudd and Gillard Governments’ was held on 22 March 2012 jointly with by ANZ Bank. Speakers included Terry Moran, Former Secretary, Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet Under Prime Ministers, Kevin Rudd and Julia Gillard; Professor Alan Fels AO, Director, ANZSOG and former Chairman of the ACCC; John Roskam, CEO, Institute of Public Affairs and; David Byrne, Director, Infrastructure and Utilities ANZ Bank.
'Media Wars and Digital Laws: Facts, Fears and Finkelstein' was held on 24 April 2012 as a breakfast forum. Speakers included Professor Julian Disney AO, Chairman of the Australian Press Council; Mr Tony Walker, International Editor, The Australian Financial Review; Professor Henry Ergas, Correspondent for The Australian and Professor of Economics, University of Wollongong; Mr John Roskam, CEO, Institute of Public Affairs and: Associate Professor Martin Hirst, Associate Professor in Journalism, Deakin University.
'New Developments in China: Political, Economic and Education' was hosted jointly by the Alfred Deakin Research Institute and the ANZ Bank on Monday 18 June 2012, and involved an informal discussion on developments, challenges and opportunities emerging in the economies, the educational systems and in technology, in our respective countries, in what has recently been described as the 'Third Industrial Revolution'. Speakers included Dr Geoff Raby AO, Former Ambassador to China; Mr Rowan Callick, Asia Pacific Editor, The Australian, Dr David Gruen, Executive Director, Macroeconomic Group, Australian Treasury and; Ms Amy Auster, Chief of Staff, CEO Asia Pacific, Europe and Americas, ANZ Bank.
'Living within the Multi-Speed Economy: The Opportunities and Adjustments with Resource Development' was held at Parliament House in Canberra on Monday 25 June 2012.This seminar, through presentations from some of Australia's leading political, policy and academic leaders, will consider the opportunities and adjustments associated with resources development.
The Deakin Policy Forum also featured the launch of a landmark report by Deloitte Access Economics, the Economic Contribution of the Australian Oil and Gas Industry, which examined the key role the growth of Australia's oil and gas industry will play in Australia's future economic development and resillience to a challenging international environment. Speakers included The Hon Ian Macfarlane MP; Mr Gary Banks AO, Chairman, Productivity Commission; Mr David Byers, Chief Executive, Australian Petroleum Production and Exploration Association; Professor Warwick McKibbin, Director, Research School of Economics, Australian National University; Mr Chris Richadson, Director, Deloitte Access Economics.
