Deakin Alumni Commerce Chapter
Welcome to the Deakin Commerce Alumni Chapter web page. The Faculty of Business and Law at Deakin University is committed to the University's mission of being Australia's most progressive university, internationally recognised for the relevance, innovation and responsiveness in its teaching and learning, research, partnerships and international activities. To this end, it is the Faculty's mission to constantly develop the skills of its current students and academic staff to ensure that they are maintained at world class standards. It is also the Faculty's mission to provide a medium of lifelong learning and communication between the University and its alumni.
Deakin alumni have established a strong presence in trade and commerce in both Australia and overseas. Deakin graduates today command distinguished positions in the public, private and not for profit sectors. From CEOs, CFOs, investment bankers, strategic and financial consultants to public servants and academics, Deakin graduates have furthered the Deakin brand from places as diverse as Colombo, Delhi, Sydney, London, Botswana and New York.
The Deakin Commerce Alumni Chapter has been established to celebrate the outstanding achievements of Deakin graduates, provide a medium for lifelong communication between the University and its graduates and above all create a source for networking and camaraderie from which it is expected that, not just the alumni, but the University, staff and current students may also benefit.
Deakin calls upon all its graduates to join the Deakin Commerce Chapter and enjoy a rich and fruitful future with the university and its cohorts.
Commerce Alumni Chapter Committee
Sasha Liyanarachi graduated from Deakin University in 2005 with a Bachelor of Commerce (Accounting/Finance). Whilst studying at University Sasha was involved as a committee member in the now Deakin Commerce Society.
After graduation, Sasha commenced working at Deloitte where she completed the Chartered Accountants Program. She currently is a Director and works in their Assurance and Advisory division predominately working with ASX listed and multinational companies.
Sasha’s involvement with the Deakin Commerce Alumni began in 2014 where she assisted with Professional Development Events, and then as a steering committee member in 2015 where she was involved in leading the Professional Development sub-committee and played a key role in organising the 2015 Charity Ball. Sasha also sits on the Deakin Advisory Board for Accounting.
Daniel is a Chartered Accountant with over 6 years’ experience both in professional services and industry roles. In July 2016, Daniel will return to Melbourne after a two year stint in London where he worked in finance roles with both Thomas Cook Group Plc and Brookfield Logistics Properties. Prior to this, he was a Client Manger with Deloitte Touché Tohmatsu in their private client advisory practice providing accounting, taxation and business advisory services predominantly to privately owned businesses and family groups. Daniel graduated from Deakin in 2008 with a Bachelor of Commerce majoring in accounting, finance and financial planning and has been involved with the Alumni committee since 2013.

Deakin Alumni Commerce Chapter Advisors
Rani graduated from Deakin University in 2008 with a Master of Business Administration (MBA) and Master of Commerce (MCom) (specialising in e-Business). During her student years, Rani was active board member with the Deakin Graduate Business Society. She was a student representative on the Deakin Business School Board in 2008.
Rani was involved in the development of the Postgraduate Student Mentoring Program and also volunteered as a mentor. Upon graduation, Rani was invited to be a member of the prestigious Golden Key International Honour Society in recognition of 'Outstanding Scholastic Achievement and Excellence'. Rani recently began a new business venture making French Provincial furniture. She previously worked as a Business Analyst with Austin Health.
Rani's contribution to the Deakin Commerce Alumni Chapter
Since graduating in 2008, Rani has been an active member of the Deakin alumni community. She has served as a panel member at Deakin Business School graduate information sessions, Faculty of Business & Law Careers Week and Professionals Showcase events, among other initiatives.
Rani has been involved in growing the Chapter's member base and organising of the networking events which have enjoyed excellent attendance levels.
Shiraz completed a Master of Business Administration (MBA) and Master of Commerce (MCom) with a specialisation in eBusiness at Deakin.
Shiraz was an active member of the student community whilst at Deakin. In addition to serving as the Treasurer of the Deakin Business School Society, Shiraz served the Academic Programs Committee and played an active role supporting the Faculty's student mentoring program. He is a current Â member of the MBA Advisory Board.Â Â
Since graduation, Shiraz has worked at the Department of Sustainability and Environment inÂ the Strategy and Innovation UnitÂ as well as with theÂ Department of Primary IndustriesÂ in the Knowledge and Information Technology Division. He is currently a senior consultant with the Litmus Group, a management consulting firm.
Shiraz's contribution to the Deakin Commerce Alumni Chapter
Shiraz has been contributing to the Deakin alumni community since graduation. His aim is to support Deakin University and enhance the profile of the alumnus. Shiraz has served as a panel member at Deakin Graduate School of Business information sessions and Faculty of Business & Law Careers Week events, assisting students make an effective transition to the workforce.
Shiraz has been actively involved with the organisation of the Chapter's networking and professional development events. During his time as President he has sought to grow the Chapter's member base.
Roger has been working within Deloitte Private's Business Advisory practice since he commenced with the firm in 2011 and has been providing accounting, taxation and business advisory services to his client base, which consists of privately owned businesses and family groups across a diverse range of industries, with revenues between $1 million and $400 million. He is currently transitioning out of his current role and will assume the position of Director within ASR Group, a company established to invest in private businesses in Australia. He will be involved in strategic planning and implementation, operation enhancement and human resource management. Roger is also a Commissioned Officer at the rank of Lieutenant in the Australian Army Reserve and is currently working as a Platoon Commander. He has over 5 years of experience working for Defence and currently trains, manages and leads a team of 30 soldiers.
Roger graduated from Deakin in 2011 with a Bachelor of Commerce majoring in Accounting, Finance and Financial Planning. He is currently completing his Graduate Diploma in Chartered Accounting with an expected completion date of February 2014. Roger joined the Alumni Committee in January 2013 and has assisted with the development and implementation of the social media strategy and alumni engagement along with organising professional development events and speaking on campus.
Mark Hui graduated with a first class Bachelor of Commerce (Honours) degree from Deakin. During his time at Deakin, Mark was the recipient of numerous scholarships from the Faculty of Business and Law. Mark also participated in an international exchange program to study at The George Washington University (USA).
In addition to his impressive academic record, Mark was also actively involved in serving the University community as a student representative to the Academic Board and as President of the prestigious Golden Key International Honour Society.
Since graduation, Mark has worked primarily in the manufacturing industry but moved into management consulting in 2008 in a role as Senior Consultant with the Litmus Group.
Mark's contribution to the Deakin Commerce Alumni Chapter
During the Chapter's first term in 2007/2008, Mark served as a steering committee member with specific responsibility for the Chapter's networking events. Mark formed a terrific team with Michael Levy and together they organised two extremely successful networking events at The Trust and at Ondergrounds in Melbourne, with total Chapter members in attendance exceeding 150. Mark also played a key role on the University support and profile enhancement front, returning to Deakin in 2008 to give an inspirational address to undergraduate Finance students on the value of a Deakin education and how to make an effective transition from university to the work force.
In the Chapter's second term in 2009, Mark served as Joint Vice-President with Michael Levy and was instrumental in the organisation of the Chapter's four networking events. Mark played a key role with the overall management and leadership of the Chapter in its second term.
Mark stands apart in his contributions to Deakin as Mark has been a Deakin supporter from well before the formation of the Chapter in 2007. As early as 2003, Mark was a common figure at student workshops and seminars on campus at Deakin. Mark's selflessness and commitment towards Deakin over the years have been extraordinary.
Michael is a Senior Associate at Madgwicks, a Melbourne based mid-sized commercial law firm. Michael joined Madgwicks in 2004 having completed his honours year at Deakin in both commerce and law in the area of corporate compliance.
Michael currently practises in general corporate and commercial advice, Mergers & Acquisitions, Corporations Act, Trade Practices Act and ASX compliance.
Michael's contribution to the Deakin Commerce Alumni Chapter
During the Chapter's first term in 2007/2008, Michael served as a steering committee member with specific responsibility for the Chapter's networking and professional development events. Michael formed a terrific team with Mark Hui and together they organised two extremely successful networking events at The Trust and at Ondergrounds in Melbourne with total Chapter members in attendance exceeding 150.
Michael was the key sponsor of the Corporate Social Responsibility and Microfinance seminar in May 2008 at which senior leaders from academia, the private sector and not-for-profit sector presented on the current state of microfinance in Australia and overseas. Michael was also the key sponsor of the Chapter's launch of its Strategic Plan for the 2007/2008 year and the first Annual General Meeting of the Chapter in November 2008, both of which were held at the boardroom of Madgwicks.
In the Chapter's second term in 2009, Michael served as Joint Vice-President with Mark Hui. During this year, Michael was instrumental in the organisation of two networking events and the Chapter's flagship event of the year - the Global Financial Crisis seminar at the RACV Club at which 160 alumni were in attendance. Michael formed a terrific team with Michael Clarke and Mark Hui and worked collaboratively throughout the year to progress the Chapter's mandate.
Since the Chapter's formation Madgwicks has been the largest corporate supporter of the Chapter with to date four Chapter events being held at Madgwicks. Michael has been solely responsible for this outstanding support from Madgwicks.
The achievements of the Chapter over the last two years reflect to a significant extent Michael's outstanding leadership skills, ability to collaborate with people and deep sense of commitment to Deakin University.
Mukund is a Director with KPMG Australia specialising in market entry advisory services focussed on corporate investment activity between Australia and Asia with a particular emphasis on India, Korea and ASEAN.
Mukund graduated from Deakin with a Bachelor of Commerce (Honours in Finance) degree in 2002, as a John Scouller awardee. He is a qualified Chartered Accountant and has also completed a Masters in International Tax at the University of Melbourne Law School and an Executive Education Program in Tax Policy at the John F. Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University.
Mukund founded the Deakin Commerce Alumni Chapter and served as the Chapter's Inaugural President in 2007/2008. Mukund has served as an advisor to the Executive and Steering Committee in 2009 and 2010.
Michael works for SG Hiscock & Co, a boutique funds management group, where he is the Portfolio Manager for a market-neutral hedge fund. Prior to SG Hiscock & Co, Michael worked in the Institutional Banking group of ANZ as Associate Director.
Michael graduated from Deakin with a Bachelor of Commerce (Honours in Finance) degree in 2003, as a John Scouller awardee. He has also completed the Chartered Financial Analyst program.
Prior to becoming President in 2009, Michael served on the Chapter's steering committee in 2007/2008.
