Students will on average spend 150 hours over the trimester undertaking the teaching, learning and assessment activities for this unit.

This will include educator guided online learning activities within the unit site.

Scheduled learning activities - campus

1 x 2 hour on-campus lectures (recordings provided) and 1 x 1 hour on-campus seminar each week

Scheduled learning activities - online

Online independent and asynchronous collaborative learning up to a maximum of 2 hours each week which includes 1 x 2 hours weekly recorded lectures and 1 x 1 hour online seminar (recordings provided) each week for 9 weeks and 1 x 1.5 hour online seminar (recordings provided) each week for 2 weeks.

Content

The unit provides an overview of the development, substance and enforcement of international human rights law, as well as its implementation in law and policy in Australia. We will consider the philosophical concepts of human rights as well as the development of the contemporary international human rights regime. We will also look at the various rights recognised in human rights law, the manner in which they can be limited as well as means for enforcement using select case studies to highlight the operation of human rights norms. The unit has a particular focus on the relationship between government policy and human rights practice.
