Content

This unit will introduce students to how poets have navigated andtransformed cultural understandings surrounding sex, gender, and thebody. Focusing on writing from the United States, students will considerhow the poetic has been mobilised in different historical periods to exploreaspects of desire, intimacy, subjectivity, and intersectionality. Students willbe familiarised with a range of forms, techniques, and literary movements(such as transcendentalism, modernism, Confessional, the Beats, and NewYork School). Through critical and creative approaches, students will alsogain insights into aspects of voice, agency, and audience. Writers studiedmay include Walt Whitman, Emily Dickinson, T.S. Eliot, Sylvia Plath, FrankO'Hara, Allen Ginsberg, Audre Lorde, Joy Harjo, and Maggie Nelson.
