Make a significant contribution to your chosen field by undertaking research grounded in clinical practice and examining symptoms and risk management.
Nurse-led research is vital for helping to minimise the large gaps in time between when research is conducted and how it is used or applied in healthcare settings.

Our nursing and midwifery research is rated as well above world standard* and is conducted through the Deakin Centre for Quality and Patient Safety Research. With strong partnerships with major Victorian healthcare providers, the Centre is uniquely positioned within academic and healthcare environments to identify and rapidly respond to emerging complex care and patient safety issues.
The Deakin Centre for Quality and Patient Safety Research enjoys productive and extensive collaborations with researchers around the world, including nursing, medicine, pharmacy psychology, epidemiology, health economics and biostatistics.
Our research spans public and private healthcare sectors in urban, regional and rural areas. Researchers lead a range of interrelated programs, which are organised into three main areas:
Projects within these areas interface with the eight National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) standards aimed at driving implementation of safety and quality systems and improving the quality of health care.

At the heart of my research is working in partnership and undertaking work that is of value at a community level. This also resonates with my background as a registered nurse in being an advocate for community needs.

The School of Nursing and Midwifery was established in 1987 and has grown to be one of the largest nursing schools in Australia. We are ranked #14 in the world for nursing and our school’s research is recognised as well above world standard^ with a focus on improving health care quality and patient safety, through the Deakin Centre for Quality and Patient Safety Research.
Our clinical partnership network is the first fully coordinated partnership collaboration of its kind in Australia. The network connects the School of Nursing and Midwifery and the Deakin Centre for Quality and Patient Safety Research to six major Victorian health services. Through this network, we conduct multidisciplinary, multi-site research, which feeds directly into our course content, education for the health services and clinical practice. Our partners include:
Each partner healthcare organisation has a joint appointment with the school in the form of a professor of clinical nursing, associate professors and senior research fellows. These joint appointments ensure our curriculum is evidence based and the research of the school is specific to the health care needs of the community.
