This unit deals with the sociological issues related to deviance and social control in two ways. One approach involves examining theories of deviancy and social control and how these theories relate to the construction of marginal identities and difference. The second approach includes in-depth case studies which illustrate the various theoretical and conceptual issues. These case studies include such topics as deviant bodies, women and crime, sexual differences, ‘madness’ and neurodiversity, and poverty and homelessness.
