SLE010 and STP010
2 x 1 hour online lecture per week (week 2, 4, 6, 7, 8, 10, 11), 3 x 1 hour online lectures (week 3), 1 x 1 hour lecture per week (week 1, 5, 9), 1 x 1 hour online lecture per week (week 1, 5, 9), 2 x 2 hour seminars per trimester (week 4 and 6), 1 x 3 hour practical experience (laboratory) per trimester. Waurn Ponds: 3 x 4 hour practical experience (field trip) per trimester. Warrnambool: 2 x 4 hour practical experience (field trip) per trimester, 1 x 5 hour practical experience (field trip) per trimester.
Students will on average spend 150 hours over the teaching period undertaking the teaching, learning and assessment activities for this unit.
This will include educator guided online learning activities within the unit site.
Students enrolled at Geelong Waurn Ponds Campus will have practical experience (field trips and laboratory) conducted from the Deakin University Queenscliff Marine Science Centre. Students enrolled at the Warrnambool Campus will have practical experience (field trips and laboratory) conducted from the Warrnambool Campus. One of the Warrnambool field trips will be 5 hours, to allow for travel time to the site. Students may be required to meet their own expenses while on fieldwork.
SLE107 will introduce students to marine science by covering the foundation knowledge on different marine environments. Students will learn about the critical challenges facing Australia's marine resources and how marine scientists are helping to solve these challenges at the local, national and global scale. This unit will also focus on developing foundational skills and capabilities required as a marine scientist. The unit will allow students the opportunity to develop broadly applicable knowledge and skills that are fundamental to a successful career by interacting with industry guest speakers and implementing a professional experience plan.
