Frequently asked questions about studying online
Is my course 100% online?
When a Deakin course is listed as online all lectures and other ‘classroom’ requirements are 100% online. For a small number of courses, there may be on-campus intensives or other out-of-home work-integrated learning (WIL) opportunities such as industry placements. You can find details about any in-person requirements on the individual unit pages for your course.
Are there on-campus intensive periods?
Some courses or units have on-campus intensive units. Dates are listed on the unit pages well ahead of time so you can plan your work and home life around it.
International students enrolled in online courses are not eligible for a student visa. If participating in one of these units, you will need to acquire a suitable visa for short-term entry to Australia.
What are the on-campus requirements for online students?
Some online course may have short intensive units on campus for a period of up to one week. End-of-unit practical assessments and exams may also, on occasion, require you to be on campus (or at another designated location). The dates for these are announced on the unit page to allow you to make plans to be here.
Can I do hybrid study (online and on campus)? How does that work?
Many on-campus courses at Deakin are designed for flexible hybrid-style study. Lectures and seminars are livestreamed and recorded for students who can’t always attend on-campus classes due to personal commitments. We recommend attending classes when possible for the in-person connection with your lecturer and fellow students though.
Students in an on-campus course sometimes even enrol in a full unit online, often in Trimester 3.
What's it like to study online?
Studying online at Deakin provides maximum flexibility. Lectures and seminars are livestreamed but also recorded so you can review them later. Using our CloudDeakin platform, you can interact with classmates for group work and study sessions.
Online students have access to the same academic supports as on-campus students. Our maths and writing mentor programs as well as subject-specific peer-support groups all operate online.
Online students also have access to our career service, DeakinTALENT for career advice, resume review and other supports.
Are there attendance requirements for online courses?
Online study is designed for maximum flexibility to fit your busy lifestyle. Livestreamed lectures and seminars are recorded so you can view them on your schedule. And you won’t be penalised for not being there in person.
There are obvious situations where you can’t be as flexible though. There are still deadlines for assessments that you have to meet. And group work will require you to be available online with your team.
