Deakin University electrical engineering student Chris Larkin has been awarded a place in the 2017 General Motors (GM) Internship Program.

From January, Chris will spend 11 months as a design intern with GM.

‘It is a wonderful opportunity to be part of this prestigious program to gain hands-on experience in engineering design,’ Chris says.

‘I have a real passion for product design and manufacturing and this program will enable me to improve my skills in this space.’

Chris has completed the third year of his electrical engineering studies. But Dr Ben Horan, Head of Discipline – Mechatronics Engineering at Deakin, remembers him as having ideas right from the very beginning.

‘It’s been fantastic to see the way our Project-Oriented Design-Based Learning (PODBL) approach to engineering education and our Centre for Advanced Design in Engineering Training (CADET) have helped support Chris in pursuing his passion,’ Dr Horan says.

‘I still remember sitting down with Chris in CADET when he was a first-year engineering student and listening to his ideas for a new type of Computer Numerical Control (CNC) mill. It’s amazing to see Chris’s passion and learning environment ultimately result in him being part of this prestigious GM program.’

Chris will resume his engineering studies at Deakin after his GM placement. And no doubt he’ll be bringing with him valuable experience in automotive engineering, design and technology.
