School of Law Alumni Head Back to Campus as Students Head Abroad

11 April 2014

Deakin Students have won the teams award at the prestigious Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot for 2014.

The Vis Moot is an international commercial arbitration moot, held in Hong Kong and Vienna each year, and is the world's most prestigious private international law mooting event.  The Deakin Law School has now participated in the Vis Moot in each of the 21 years it has run in Vienna, and 11 years it has run in Hong Kong. This year, 11 students from the School of Law represented Deakin University in the competition and four of those students have argued the case in Hong Kong and Vienna.  The Deakin Law School has continued its distinguished record in the event, with outstanding results – receiving two individual Honorable Mention awards, placing in the top 16 of 99 teams in Hong Kong, and receiving the Frédéric Eisemann Award as the winning team (of 290 teams) in Vienna.

Having come runners-up in Hong Kong on two previous occasions and winning the Vienna oral rounds once before, the Deakin Law School has firmly established itself amongst the top of the class in the annual event.  Deakin is now one of only three universities worldwide to have received the Frédéric Eisemann Award in Vienna on two separate occasions.

Benjamin Hayward, Coach of the Deakin Vis Moot teams, believes that alumni involvement in the competition has been and continues to be integral to Deakin's success.  He adds 'it is great to have so many alumni continuing to provide significant assistance to the team year on year, and Deakin's new Vis Moot alumni also joining in the process as the years progress – many of our alumni reaffirm that they use the skills they developed through their own participation in the Vis Moot every day in their professional lives and their willingness and enthusiasm in sharing that with our students is a wonderful aspect of the Law School's alumni connections'.

The School of Law and the Deakin Alumni Community congratulate our students on their results in the 2014 Vis Moot and thank our Vis Moot alumni for their enthusiasm and support for the program.
