1. What is an ABN?

Australian Business Numbers (ABNs) are issued by the Australian Taxation Office. An ABN is a single identifier for all business dealings with the tax office and for dealings with other government departments and agencies.

To be entitled to an ABN you must be carrying on an enterprise in Australia. An enterprise, among other things, is an activity or series of activities done in the form of a business. 

Some examiners based in Australia have an ABN but it is not essential to have one to act as an examiner.

2. When do I need to log on?

Please log on at your earliest convenience to verify you can access the system and to confirm or decline your acceptance to examine the thesis and indicate if you would prefer a hard copy posted to you.

7. How do I request a hard copy?

You will be asked if you would like a hard copy when you log onto HDR Examinations. Select yes.

 
If you previously selected no but have changed your mind, contact the Examinations Officer HDR.

8. Do I need to record receipt of the hard copy thesis?

Yes. Please record receipt of the hard copy for our records so we can be sure you received it.

9. How long do I have to complete an examination and submit my report and recommendation?

You have 6 weeks to complete an examination. Your report due date is noted in HDR Examinations.

12. I have submitted my report and recommendation, how long until I get paid?

If you are an overseas examiner, your honorarium is approved within 7 business days, then our Finance department requests and purchases the funds, in your currency, from Travelex, which can take up to 21 business days and then the cheque is posted to you.

 
If you are a domestic examiner with an ABN, your honorarium will be approved within 7 business days then your payment will be sent from our Finance department within 21 business days. Please ensure you have entered your ABN in HDR Examinations.
 
If you are a domestic examiner without an ABN, you will sent a Miscellaneous Payment Form and a TFN Declaration within 7 business days.  You will need to complete and sign both forms and return both forms at your earliest convenience.  Once these forms have been received, your honorarium will be approved within 7 business days and then a cheque will be sent from our Finance department within 21 business days.

13. How much do I get paid?

Examiners are paid an honorarium upon submission of a written report on a thesis.  The rate is:

  • Doctoral thesis – AUD425
  • Masters thesis – AUD240
