FAQs about the impact of COVID-19 on thesis examinations
You are not required to include a COVID-19 Thesis Impact Statement in your thesis. It is an optional element.
Australia’s COVID-19 response included lockdowns restricting intra-city, interstate, and international travel, limiting social interaction, closure of schools and universities and the requirement to work and study remotely.
Victoria, Australia, the location of Deakin campuses, experienced six lockdowns between March 2020 and October 2021 that collectively totalled 262 days. These were among the longest city-wide lockdowns in the world.
From early 2020, Deakin sought to mitigate this impact on our higher degree by research students. These students were given priority access to laboratories, supported to pivot research projects, and received extensions to candidature time (and scholarships).
Not all impact on research could be mitigated due to the extended direct and indirect effects of limited domestic and international travel, closed university campuses, and restricted in-person access to human research participants and fieldwork.
Each candidate will present it in the way they believe best suits their research and thesis. It may be:
- a separate page at the beginning of the thesis (up to 600 words) or
- integrated into the thesis in relevant chapters.
A COVID-19 Thesis Impact Statement does not seek ‘special consideration’ – all submitted work is expected to be an original contribution to discipline knowledge. In making your recommendation as an examiner, you exercise your academic judgement about the quality of the research and if it meets the criteria for recommendation of the award.
Rather, a COVID-19 Thesis Impact Statement is to provide you with information about the research challenges faced due to disruptions associated with the COVID-19 pandemic and how these challenges were addressed.
Where the COVID-19 Thesis Impact Statement outlines disruption to research activities, you may consider some flexibility in the scope and volume of research as well as methods deployed from other disciplines.

FAQs about payment
Australian Business Numbers (ABNs) are issued by the Australian Taxation Office. An ABN is a single identifier for all business dealings with the tax office and for dealings with other government departments and agencies.
To be entitled to an ABN you must be carrying on an enterprise in Australia. An enterprise, among other things, is an activity or series of activities done in the form of a business.
Some examiners based in Australia have an ABN, but it is not essential to have one to act as an examiner.
The Australian Taxation Office provides further information on ABNs.
If you are an overseas examiner, your honorarium is approved within seven business days, then your payment will be deposited into your nominated bank account by Western Union in your home country's currency within 21 business days.
