National Tree Planting Day - 2010

Tree planting days will be held at the Melbourne Campus at Burwood on 17 August 2010, between 10am and 2pm, and at the Warrnambool Campus on 15 August 2010, between 10am and 12pm. The plantings will celebrate National Tree Day and will assist with offsetting some of Deakin’s greenhouse gas emissions as part of the implementation of the Environmental Management Plan’s Biodiversity Program.

Apart from offsetting greenhouse emissions, by absorbing carbon dioxide and converting it into oxygen, trees help stabilise the soil, reduce soil erosion and provide essential habitat for wildlife.

Trees will be planted behind the student residences at the Melbourne Campus at Burwood, increasing woodland habitat along the northern boundary of the Campus. At the Warrnambool Campus, the plantings will supplement the previously planted swampy woodland habitat along the Hopkins River frontage.

The events, which are being organised by the Office of Environment (Facilities Management Services Division), will include a free barbeque lunch for participants.  All staff and students are welcome to drop in at any time and participate in the plantings.

To register your interest (for catering purposes) please email enviro@deakin.edu.au.
