Chapter of possibilities for Deakin engineering students
Deakin newsProfessional development, technical workshops and networking with industry are some of the opportunities for members of the IEEE Industry Applications Society (IAS) Student Branch Chapter at Deakin University.
Dr Shama Islam is Lecturer in Electrical Engineering at Deakin’s School of Engineering and is helping the group as a student advisor. She says they recently organised a site visit to Wilson Transformers and also a technical workshop on PSS-E (an industry standard software for power engineers).
"The group acts like a platform for Deakin engineering students to engage in professional skill development through industry site visits and technical workshops," Dr Islam explains.
"It also gives them the opportunity to network with industry professionals and obtain leadership skills."
The IEEE, which stands for the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, describes itself as the world’s largest technical professional organisation ‘dedicated to advancing technology for the benefit of humanity’. The IAS is one of the largest special interest societies within the IEEE.
Dr Islam says the number of members in the Deakin group has more than doubled since its formation in December 2016. As well as professional development opportunities and events, she says there is IAS support for IEEE IAS student members to attend IEEE conferences and to enter international student competitions. Overall, she says membership helps students to form global connections that can help them advance their career.
