PHD SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITY
Are you looking for a PhD scholarship in an exciting area of education research?

We have a fantastic opportunity for someone with a great academic record (Honours, Masters by research or equivalent) in education, sociology, cultural studies or related social science field and who wants to do a PhD in social justice, education policy and/or teachers’ pedagogy. Experience in primary or secondary schools would be an advantage but is not essential.

The opportunity comes with a scholarship of $24,653 per annum for three years. It is only for full time students and we only have one scholarship. The successful applicant will be located at the Burwood campus of Deakin University (Melbourne) and must be an Australian or New Zealand citizen or have permanent residency status. A relocation allowance is available if needed.

The scholarship is attached to an existing research project funded by the Australian Research Council (ARC), titled: Social Justice Dispositions Informing Teachers’ Pedagogy in Advantaged and Disadvantaged Secondary Schools. A short description of the project can be found here: http://www.deakin.edu.au/arts-ed/education/news/12-arc-discovery.php

The ARC project blends Vygotskian sociocultural/activity theory with Bourdieu’s theories of habitus and dispositions. It uses these theoretical insights to research the social justice dispositions of teachers in different school settings. Schools and teachers in Melbourne and Brisbane will be involved in the research.

The PhD student will work with the ARC project team and will have opportunity to create his/her own project within or complementary to this broad frame. The lead CI on the ARC project, Professor Trevor Gale, will be the PhD student’s primary supervisor.

Applications close on 21 June 2013. However, applications will be also considered before this time and an appointment made when a suitable applicant is found.

Applications are submitted online. See details at: http://www.deakin.edu.au/future-students/research/scholarships/social-justice-disposition-education-phd-scholarship.php

Intending applicants should consult with Professor Gale before submitting an application, via email: trevor.gale@deakin.edu.au or phone: +61 3 9251 7245

The ARC project team includes: Professor Trevor Gale, Dr Russell Cross (University of Melbourne), Dr Carmen Mills (University of Queensland) and Dr Stephen Parker (Deakin University).

Don't miss out on this great opportunity.
