FAQs – Start Anytime at Deakin University

At Deakin University, a subject is called a unit and a degree or program is a course. Online study is called cloud learning.

What can I study?

We are starting with two units in Deakin’s Business School:

How long will it take to finish a Start Anytime unit?

This will depend on your circumstances, but you can be enrolled for a minimum of four weeks and a maximum of one year.

Do I need to commit to the length of study period before I start?

No, you can keep it flexible and see how you go. You just need to keep in touch with us so we can be sure you are having an excellent experience, and so that we can support your successful completion of the unit.

When can I start?

From 4 January 2016

What campus are Start Anytime units offered on?

Start Anytime units are on Deakin's Cloud Campus. The Cloud Campus comes to you, whenever and wherever you want. And as an enrolled Deakin student, you are welcome on any campus, if there is one near you, or at any Learning Centre, where you can print and use Deakin's fast broadband for Skyping or watching and downloading videos.

How does the assessment work?

In Business Process Management (MPM701A), there are two written assignments, one worth 40% and one worth 60%. Both are individual assignments and the questions are unique to each student.

In Analytics Skills Foundations (MIS770A), there are two written assignments, worth 15% and 35%, and an oral test, worth 50%, conducted by Skype or face-to-face. You can submit the first two assignments when you are ready. When it's time for your oral test, you negotiate a time that suits you with your teacher.

You can submit each assignment when you are ready and prompt feedback will be given (usually between five to ten working days).

Are there any exams?

There are no fixed point supervised exams in Start Anytime units.

Are there timetabled classes?

No. That’s the whole point: you learn at your own pace. The teaching materials are designed in a way that allows you to go as quickly (or slowly) as you want.

What support is available?

Teaching staff will run regular online workshops that you attend; you can post queries on discussion boards in the unit site and your fellow students or teachers will reply; get one-to-one support with your learning via Skype or email. Help is also available from the Deakin Library and other areas of the university such as language and learning advisors. Connect through DeakinSync.

What does it cost?

Start Anytime units cost the same as the timetabled version of the units.

Can I do both Start Anytime units at the same time?

Yes, providing they fit into your course structure and your load. Contact 1300 DEGREE (1300 334 733) or email myfuture@deakin.edu.au.

Can I do a Start Anytime unit at the same time as a normal trimester unit?

Yes, you can.

Why are there only two units available?

These two units were selected because they are popular and particularly well suited to this style of independent, flexible learning.

Will more units be available for Start Anytime?

The Start Anytime program will be rolled out to further units across other faculties over time.

What degrees do these units enable access to?
