2014: The year of the alumni
30 April 2014
The Faculty of Business and Law is home to Deakin's strongest alumni communities with 8419 Victorian members belonging to five active chapters. This year the faculty is excited to be supporting 18 alumni events ranging from networking opportunities, to professional development events, through to the annual Commerce Alumni Chapter Charity Ball.
Deakin's newest Alumni Chapter held its official launch on Wednesday April 9 at Deakin's Melbourne City Centre. Melbourne's rainy weather did nothing to deter around 90 sport management alumni and guests who were treated to a keynote speech by Mr Michael Brown, CEO of the Organising Committee of the 2015 Asian Cup- Australia's largest sporting event since the 2000 Olympics. Attendees hailed from a wide range of national and state sporting organisations, player associations, professional teams, and sporting and event brands. Dr Adam Karg, Course Director and Chair of the Sport Management Alumni Chapter Committee, noted the success of the night, citing a 'wonderful showcase of the breadth and quality of our alumni, ranging from our newest graduates from recent ceremonies in April, and representing nearly all of the 25 graduating years of Deakin courses'.' The enthusiasm and passion for the program and industry was clear and the launch formed the perfect platform for future Alumni events in 2014 and beyond. 'The night also hosted the sport management program's 2013 undergraduate and postgraduate student awards which were presented by Associate Professor Pamm Phillips and award sponsors. More information can be found on the Sport Management Alumni Chapter website.
The Deakin Sport Management Alumni Chapter is not the only alumni community enjoying great success. The Deakin Commerce Alumni Chapter is the university's strongest alumni community and has already hosted two popular events this year with almost 200 members in attendance. A professional development event with a keynote presentation by AFL player turned American football punter Ben Graham proved highly successful, and was closely followed by another networking event. The Commerce Alumni Chapter committee are now gearing up for their annual charity ball in July. This event is open to the public and Faculty staff are encouraged to attend what is sure to be a fantastic evening for a great cause. Further details coming soon.
On the international front, Deakin Alumni in Singapore had an opportunity to meet Pro Vice Chancellor and Executive Dean, Professor Mike Ewing, at the luxurious Marina Bay Sands resort on April 9 2014. Held as an informal cocktail evening, a group of ten Deakin Alumni gathered to network and get updates about Deakin University from Professor Ewing.
Finally, this year will also see the rejuvenation of the MBA Alumni Chapter and further development of the Accounting and Law Alumni communities. An exciting time for the Faculty of Business and Law alumni community.
