Q: Can international students get concession fares on public transport?
A: No. International students in Victoria are not eligible for public transport concessions and must pay full adult fare. Please understand that this is a decision of the State Government and not the University.
Q: Is public transport safe?
A: Public transport is generally safe in Victoria, however there are some things that you can do to make it even safer. If taking public transport late at night, always try to sit as close to the driver as possible. If on a bus or tram, sit in the front seats near the driver. If on a train, sit in the closest carriage to the driver. Don’t’ draw unnecessary attention to yourself by wearing expensive jewellery or carrying expensive items such as laptops, i-Pads or phones. If you have to carry them, keep them in a bag. Avoid carrying large amounts of money on you. If waiting at a train, tram or bus stop at night, always try to stay in well lit areas. If you see anyone behaving badly, don’t look at them and stay away from them.
Q: How does public transport work in Victoria?
A: The type of public transport available will depend on where you live. Ask an International Student Adviser (ISA) on your campus about public transport in your area.
