Transport and travel

Some links on this page open in a new window.

Public transport

All campuses are accessible by several forms of public transport including buses, trams and trains.

For information on the state public transport system, visit DUSA4U via the student portal. Public transport information is also available from Metlink (Tel: 131 638) or visit VicTrip for statewide travel information.

DUSA4U carries a limited stock of bus timetables and bus/tram tickets. Information on DUSA4U is available at the student portal.

For more information about the public transport timetable, visit: Metlink Melbourne or Connex Melbourne.

Metcard

To travel on public transport in Melbourne you must purchase a Metcard. A Metcard is allows you to use public transport in Melbourne. Metcards must be validated before travelling even if you have pre-purchased a Metcard. There are 3 different zones for public transport in Melbourne - Zone 1 (where the city centre is), Zone 2 (where the Melbourne Campus at Burwood is) and Zone 3 (outer suburbs).

Please note that:

Street directory

There are a number of street directories. Melways is commonly used with maps of Melbourne and surrounding areas. It also shows all the major train, bus and tram routes. The easiest way to find streets and places such as restaurants is to simply look up the index at the back.

A copy of Melways costs around $50. Current editions can be purchased from post offices, newsagencies and some department stores such as K-Mart. Older editions (which are cheaper) may be purchased from second-hand shops.

Taxi

Taxis can be expensive. If you are travelling long distances such as to or from the city, you may wish to catch a taxi with a group of friends so you can split the cost.

Some of the major taxi companies are:

Travelling around Victoria and interstate

When travelling around Victoria or interstate, you travel on coaches or trains (Country Link in Sydney and Brisbane; Great Southern Railway in Adelaide, Perth and Alice Springs; and V/Line in Victoria) which depart from Spencer Street Station in the city. V/Line is beyond the metropolitan area. As such different tickets (not Metcards) are required from the train station. For more information call V/Line on 13 61 96.

Travelsmart

If you need more information on public transport, or perhaps you are thinking of walking or cycling to the Melbourne Campus at Burwood, then visit the TravelSmart webpage. You will also find news and events, including the latest competitions as well as useful travel tips.

A TravelSmart map has been developed by the Department of Infrastructure, Melways and Deakin University and the City of Whitehorse to provide sustainable transport information on a pocket-sized street map with standard Melway references, and it is available as a PDF download.
