Doctoral Degree Recipients

Doctoral Degree Receipents

Dr J.B. Patsy Amaradasa - Thesis Title:"State-NGO Relations in Malaysia in the Mahathir Years."

Summary
This thesis states that the containment of NGOs is not simply due to the states control of the political mechanisms. This study argues that the boundaries for NGOs are determined by the interplay between the state, the ruling elites, the middle class and the business elites.

Dr Ghassan Al Shatter - Thesis Title: "A Processability Approach to Agreement Morphology in Arabic L2."

Summary
This thesis tests the processability theory (PT) (Pienemann 1998; 2005) predictions for agreement morphology in the acquisition of Arabic L2. The thesis has demonstrated that, apart from a few cases, learners of Arabic L2 acquired the test structures according to the PT's predictions for L2 sequential development.

Dr Naarah Sawers - Thesis Title: "Critical Fictions: Science, Feminism, and Corporeal Subjectivity."

Summary
Critical Fictions: science, feminism, and corporeal subjectivity draws on feminist theory from the sciences and the humanities to analyse dystopian literature for children and adults. The thesis demonstrates that fiction plays a critical role in understanding how subjectivity and corporeality is implicated in the directions that new science is taking.

Occasional Address

Ms Emma Alberici

The Occasional Address (iLecture recording - requires broadband) was delivered by Ms Emma Alberici, Journalist ABC.

Ms Alberici joined the ABC in 2002 as presenter of its morning business television news program, Business Breakfast. During her six years at the ABC she has presented on every television news program as well as The 7.30 Report, where as the current Finance Editor she is responsible for all business content. Ms Alberici has also previously hosted the ABC's Midday News and she is often called upon to provide financial commentary on various radio chat shows.

After completing a bachelor degree in Journalism and Economics at Deakin University in Geelong she started her career as a copy person on the Melbourne Herald Sun where under the guidance of respected columnist, Terry McCrann, she rose through the ranks to become Personal Finance and Small Business Editor.

In 1993, Ms Alberici was invited to join the Nine Network's Money show, which at the time was among the highest rating programs on Australian television. Emma spent close to ten years at Channel Nine where she reported for Business Sunday and A Current Affair as well as helping to launch The Small Business Show. That program initiated the publishing of three highly successful business books. One of which, The Small Business Book, authored by Ms Alberici, has sold over 60,000 copies to date and is one of the highest selling small business books on the market.

Ms Alberici has twice been a finalist in the Walkley Awards for Excellence in Journalism, both times she was nominated for her outstanding investigative reporting. Ms Alberici is also regular on ABC Radio's current affairs program - AM, The World Today and PM - where she is learning a new discipline to add to her broadcast skill-set.

Ms Alberici lives in Sydney with her husband and three young children where she also enjoys indulging her other passion in life; cooking.
