Dr Nicola Johnson - Thesis Title: "Teenage Technological Experts: Bourdieu and the Performance of Expertise."
Summary
This thesis explores the construction of technological expertise amongst a heterogenous group of New Zealand teenagers, specifically regarding their home computer use, which for many of them is their primary site of leisure. Drawing on Pierre Bourdieu¿s socio-cultural theories, the capital, habitus and field of the teenagers are described.
Dr David Wei - Thesis Title: "English Teachers' Shaping of Students' Democratic Attitudes in Taiwan."
Summary
This study has several findings. English language teachers' multiple identities and 'guided democracy' educate students to be autonomous and tolerant of different cultures. A global curriculum enables students to negotiate 'Eastern' and 'Western' cultures. Communicative pedagogies have contributed to both solutions and problems. An integrated pedagogy is essential.
Dr Rachel Patrick - Thesis Title: "New Tteachers, Professional Knowledge and Educational Reform in New Zealand."
Summary
This thesis examined the effects of contemporary equity policies and accountability cultures on new teachers learning. It found that teachers' knowledge and identity formation are not simply sequential. Teachers use multiple sources of knowledge in complex ways. These findings have implications for teacher education and teachers working towards equity.
