Dr Intha Ranie Chetty - Thesis title: "Secondary Students: Rhythms of Learning and Pedagogies for Change."

Summary
Results indicated: Literacy programs provided optimal learning environments for access, participation and outcomes, reconnecting marginalised students to education; students were able to determine their preferred reading methods and educational pathways; students could negotiate work requirements, learned to be optimistic through creative pedagogies and built solid relationships through improved social skills.

Dr Iris Yi-Shin Liou - Thesis title: "English as an International Lanugage and Teachers' Professional Identity."

Summary
This thesis found that the notion of English as a lingua franca and its implications in teaching English are difficult for English teachers to accept in a social-cultural context where English is a foreign language. Teachers' professional identity is the key to determine the success or failure of educational innovations.

Dr Kim Munich
- Thesis title: "Canadian Nursing Students’ Coping Strategies for Learning Online."

Summary
This research reports on the experiences of Canadian nursing students as they coped with learning online, exploring the strategies that they used to learn effectively. The findings identified aspects of course design and online facilitation that will help students cope with the lack of social presence in the online environment.

Occasional Address

Mary Jo Capps, Chief Executive Officer, Musica Viva Australia

The Occasional Address was delivered by Ms Mary Jo Capps, Chief Executive Officer, Musica Viva Australia.

Mary Jo Capps has worked in the Australian cultural industry for 30 years after graduating with an MA in Musicology from the University of Toronto in her country of origin, Canada.

She began her professional career in Perth WA working with symphony orchestras and ABC radio on both sides of the continent. In 1986 she established her own consultancy practice, focused on facilitating strategic planning, overseas touring, board development and fundraising in several major Australian arts companies including the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, Company B Belvoir Theatre, Bangarra Dance Theatre, National Institute of Dramatic Arts (NIDA) and the Museum of Contemporary Art.

Following three years as Deputy Managing Director and Director of Development for the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, Ms Capps was appointed to the top job at Musica Viva in 1999. Since joining Musica Viva, she has worked towards broadening the access to and understanding of fine music throughout Australia, supported by strong community partnerships.

Ms Capps serves as a board director on the Victorian College of the Arts and the Sydney Chamber of Commerce and an advisory board member of the Centre for Social Impact, as well as a national mentor in philanthropy for Artsupport Australia.

Deakin University acknowledges the traditional land owners of present campus sites.
