How much does it cost to go to university?

Tuition fees at Deakin vary depending on the course, the type of student you are and if you're eligible for recognition of prior learning. Most undergraduate courses have Commonwealth supported places (CSP), where the Australian Government pays most of your tuition fees. Most postgraduate courses are full fee paying. Find your student type below for more information about tuition fees and any financial support that may be available to you.

I am fortunate enough to have a scholarship through Deakin. I was amazed at how simple it was – Deakin checked my eligibility with one application. The peace of mind it gave me is something I'll never take for granted.

How can I reduce my study costs?

Not everyone pays the full tuition and SSAF fees. And most students don’t pay them all up front. Here are some of the ways that you can save on your course costs.

Access a Government loan

There are HELP loans available for all types of domestic students. Students in a CSP can defer their student contribution with a HECS-HELP loan. Full fee-paying students can apply for a FEE-HELP loan. Repayments are made through the Australian taxation system once your annual income exceeds the minimum threshold.

Apply for a scholarship

Be recognised for your past achievements and your future potential. Deakin is proud to offer scholarships that financially support students at all levels of study to make their study goals and life plans come true.

Get recognition for prior learning

Turn your study and life experience into course credit and reduce your overall study time and tuition costs. Every new course application at Deakin is automatically assessed for recognition of prior learning.

Study a double degree

Save time and money and increase your employability with a double degree. Get two complementary degrees in as little as one extra year of study. This also gets you into the workforce and earning earlier.

What do my fees pay for?

Deakin is the #1 Victorian university for resources and facilities. We’re always investing in new spaces and the latest equipment. No matter what you study, you can be sure you’re getting an up-to-date, cutting-edge experience.

The SSAF provides services that support you as a student. It pays for non-academic things such as:

  • Deakin University Student Association (DUSA)
  • sport and recreation facilities
  • health and wellbeing support
  • DeakinTALENT career service.

Frequently asked questions about the cost of universty

You will get an invoice with a date that your fees are due. Domestic students who are eligible for HECS-HELP or FEE-HELP loans can defer their student contribution until after they graduate. You then pay it through the Australian Tax Office when you start earning above the minimum threshold.

We will invoice you with the dollar amount and the due date. If you’re in a CSP place, you will only need to pay your student contribution component. If you’re in a full fee-paying course, your payment will be based on the units you’re enrolled in. There are a lot of online payment options so it’s easy to pay.

We know that sometimes circumstances change. If you’ve already paid your fees and can’t continue in your course, as long as it is before the census date you can get a refund.

There will probably be additional expenses associated with your course. Some are optional, some you won’t be able to get around. Depending on what you are studying, they include things like:

  • textbooks
  • equipment
  • resources and materials for projects
  • study tours and excursions.

Yes. We’re here to help. Deakin is the #1 Victorian uni for student support. Our Student Emergency Assistance Fund provides lifeline emergency grants – whether that’s helping you keep a roof over your head or stay connected online. DUSA also operates a food pantry on every campus. And if financial pressures are stressing you out, we offer free counselling and budgeting support to help you get back on track.
