Master by Research degrees

Master of Applied Science, Master of Nursing, Master of Social Work

Two years full time or part-time equivalent

Thank you for your interest in undertaking a research degree within the Faculty of Health at Deakin University. This web page provides information about the application process.

Entry requirements:
The entry requirements for admission to candidature for Master by Research studies within the Faculty of Health are:

  • a bachelor degree with honours in a field relevant to the area of research
  • and the strong support of a Deakin University research supervisor.

Applicants who do not hold these qualifications are required to provide evidence that their qualifications and/or experience are equivalent to the above requirements. Evidence of participation in research projects, research publications, conference papers and the extent of that participation will assist us in assessing your ability to undertake independent research at a higher degree level. You should provide full details of the relevant funding bodies, journals, and/or conferences.

Choice of topic:
Before applying for research candidature it is necessary for you to identify a topic area for study. Research Degrees at Deakin University involve the writing of a thesis on the topic of your choice with the advice and guidance of your supervisor/s. The degree is assessed on the thesis alone, there being no coursework component. It is, therefore, important that you consider very carefully the possible lines of enquiry open to you. Academic staff in the Faculty of Health can provide you with assistance concerning your choice of topic and can provide advice on the preparation of the research proposal.

Writing the research proposal:
The submission of a cogent research proposal is an essential part of the application for research degree studies. This will be a major factor in the assessment of your application. Applications that do not include a proposal will not be considered.

You should demonstrate that you have:

  • an adequate background of knowledge in the field of study
  • an adequate background in research methodology
  • thoroughly considered the proposed topic (its extent, how the project will be structured and what the outcomes are likely to be)
  • undertaken some preparatory reading on the topic.
