Topic 2: What is a demonstrator?

Demonstrators run (or assist in running) practical classes, usually in laboratories. As a demonstrator you will be expected to carry out a wide range of duties, the details of which will vary according to:

• the nature of the discipline
• the size of class and number of demonstrators in each session
• the standard practices of the Faculty or School
• the individual preferences of the unit chair

Teaching in a laboratory requires specialised skills related to dealing with health and safety issues, equipment and technical skills not faced in a typical tutorial situation.

This module has been developed to be general enough to account for the above differences while providing specific information and advice to help you in developing your teaching skills
