I am pleased to invite you to attend the Alfred Deakin Research Institute (ADRI)'s 2013 Papua New Guinea symposium, on Thursday the 4th and Friday the 5th of April this year, at the picturesque and historic surrounds of Deakin University's Geelong Waterfront campus.

The 2013 Papua New Guinea symposium is the third in the annual series of symposia that are intended to aid communication among researchers and practitioners in PNG, Australia, and elsewhere in the region. This year, the focus will be on the subject of leadership: what kind of leadership is most appropriate for PNG, as it overcomes the many challenges it is facing?

The symposium complements ADRI's research theme for 2013 - forms of leadership and the changing nature of the state. During the year there will be a number of other activities connected with this theme. The PNG symposium is an important element in the approach that ADRI takes towards enhancing the study of contemporary society.

Since its establishment in 2009, the Alfred Deakin Research Institute has established an active research portfolio that examines and contributes to the relationship between PNG and Australia.  Two research streams in particular, International Development, led by Professor Mark McGillivray and Life Stories and Leadership led by Dr Jonathan Ritchie have been at the forefront of this engagement with PNG.  In organizing and hosting this symposium series we have brought together hundreds of women and men from across the two countries who believe that working together in partnership and collaboration offers the best possible future for both Australia and PNG.

With presenters from universities in PNG, Australia, and several other countries, the public services of both our nations, churches, civil society organisations, businesses, and the general public, the 2013 PNG symposium promises to be everything that previous symposia have been, and so much more.  With its theme of 'Leadership for the Next Generation' it looks forward to a future where capable and accomplished Papua New Guineans will exercise a style of leadership that is effective, ethical, and applied to PNG's unique social and cultural setting.

I am sure that, like me, you are looking forward to joining in what will be a stimulating, educational, and challenging two days at the Geelong Waterfront.  Registration is open now, I hope to see you there.
