International Travel Insurance for Students
The Deakin University Travel Insurance Policy provides cover for medical and additional expenses as a result of injury or illness, emergency travel assistance, loss of baggage, loss of personal effects, personal liability, loss of deposits and additional travel expenses whilst on approved international study related travel.
Once Students have registered for travel insurance, the Deakin University Travel Insurance Policy provides insurance cover for approved international study related travel up to 12 months, including a maximum of 10 days leisure travel either immediately before or after the study component (or combination thereof), at no charge to the student.
Please note that insurance cover is not provided when a journey is undertaken against medical advice, or when a journey is undertaken for the purpose of obtaining medical treatment, or when a terminal illness is diagnosed prior to the commencement date of the journey.
A $0 excess (deductible) applies to all medical claims. A $250 excess (deductible) applies to all non-medical claims - a Summary of the Travel Insurance Policy document outlines the main policy provisions.
Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) Smart Traveller
Deakin University Staff and Students traveling on University approved international travel must not travel to countries/cities/regions when such locations are listed by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) as level 4 "Do not travel". Please note that the overall alert level for a country may be rated at levels 1 to 3 however, cities and / or regions within that country may be at level 4 "Do not travel". Registering for Travel Insurance:
Students must complete the International Travel Insurance Registration form at least ten working days prior to departure. The completed form needs to be submitted to firstname.lastname@example.org. Registration will be confirmed by return e-mail within 3 working days. Please note students are not covered under the Deakin University Travel Insurance Policy until they are in receipt of a travel insurance confirmation email from the Insurance Office.
Additional leisure travel (in excess of 10 days)
Once Students have registered for travel insurance, the Deakin University Travel Insurance Policy provides insurance cover for approved international study related travel up to 12 months, including a maximum of 10 days leisure travel either immediately before or after the study component (or combination thereof), at no charge to the Student.
A separate stand-alone Private Travel Insurance Policy needs to be purchased to provide insurance cover for additional leisure days (in excess of 10 days leisure travel), or for accompanying travelers, or for travel within Australia (i.e. domestic travel). Students that need to purchase a Private Travel Insurance Policy, need to familiarise themselves with the details on the Private Travel Insurance Policy page (incl. the QBE Portal info).
Procedure for claims under the Deakin University Travel Insurance Policy
Claims under all sections of the policy must be lodged as soon as possible after the date of loss. In order for your claim to be processed quickly, please ensure you submit all supporting documentation (statements, receipts, valuations, accounts etc) with a fully completed claim form. The claim form and supporting documentation need to be submitted directly to Corporate Services Network (CSN). CSN will forward the claim form to the Insurance Officer for review prior to returning it to CSN, who will formally submit it to the insurer.
