Roots of Resilience: Celebrating Deakin Warrnambool’s History
Exhibition details
About exhibition
This exhibition traces the campus's evolution from the Warrnambool Institute of Advanced Education (WIAE) to its 1990 merger with Deakin. It explores student life, the strong sense of community, and initiatives like the Deakin Engagement and Access Program (DEAP) and the Mentors of Deakin program (MoD squad) that support rural and underrepresented students.
In 2016 Deakin's Warrnambool Campus faced potential closure due to declining enrolment. In response, the community rallied with unwavering determination, filling a Town Hall meeting to capacity. Their passionate advocacy not only preserved the campus but reaffirmed the University's vital role as part of Warrnambool’s identity and its future.
The exhibition also highlights Warrnambool's research contributions, from regional healthcare innovations to clean energy advancements at the Hycel Technology Hub – Australia's first hydrogen fuel cell research facility, developed in consultation with members of the Peek Whurrong, Gunditjmara/Maar Nation and Keerray Woorroong, Yorta Yorta, Maar Nation.
Through archival treasures, personal stories and pioneering research, Roots of Resilience captures the enduring spirit of innovation, inclusivity and resilience that defines Deakin Warrnambool and its deep ties to the natural and social landscape.
In the research and preparation of this exhibition, we heard countless passionate stories and memories from community members and received many donations of objects and artefacts that capture the rich history of the Warrnambool Campus and community. We were unable to include everything we received, so this exhibition presents a snapshot of this rich and varied history. We thank all community members for their enthusiasm, heart and dedication to sharing their stories.
